I was reminded last week of “a life well lived”. Here’s some interesting statistics for you. In a lifetime across 80 years the average person makes over 1 billion decisions. Even factoring in fewer decisions during childhood, a person still makes over 1 Billion decisions in their life. That’s 35,000 per day. The byproduct of our decisions are our choices.
A dear friend of mine lost her dad last week. I knew him and held him in very high regard. Having the pleasure of being in his company on several occasions, I really enjoyed our time together. Not to compare myself to such a successful man, but we did have much in common. He was a country boy, an avid golfer and sports fan. That’s all it took for me, but there was so, so much more.
My friend’s dad was Dr. Joe Earp. His life started in the simplicity of a small town outside of Raleigh. Those types of places are known for building strong work ethics. He had his first job at age 12. He was President of his High School class and a star football and baseball player. He finished his undergraduate studies and went on to graduate from dental school. He married the love of his life and served his country as a Naval officer and dentist. After that, he built a successful dental practice where he served his patients with compassion and relentless dedication until he retired.
Most importantly he was the father of two beautiful daughters who both, following their dad’s example, went on to build successful lives of their own. He was a proud grandfather who enjoyed times at the lake and UNC football and basketball games with the family. Just weeks ago, he spent the weekend at the lake with both his daughters. By now you are realizing that Dr. Earp has checked all the blocks.
I can only imagine the decisions this man must have faced. To leave behind such a legacy “just doesn’t happen”. Each twist and turn of his life found him at a “crossroads” point where he was faced with a choice. What better evidence anyone can leave behind is that “the choices were good”. Bless you Dr. Earp for the example. You will be missed.
