Motherhood is said to be sanctifying but also sweet. Scripture teaches mothers to point their children toward Christ by praying for them, modeling faith and character for them and training them in wisdom. It’s often said that God uses the challenges of motherhood to conform us to Christ’s likeness. In all the responsibilities of being a mom, God promises to be faithful in providing all that is needed.

My heart is heavy for a dearest and cherished friend who lost his mother last week. I rejoice for her in a life well lived knowing she is now with Jesus. But I grieve alongside her son who has stood beside me in so many ways throughout my life. I have known my friend for fifty years and have written about him on numerous occasions in this forum. Whenever Mark and I are together, I always ask about his mom. I can always expect his face to light up with an ear to ear grin before giving me a report.

We are both cut from the same rural, down to earth cloth. I know my friend well. I know what he thinks about things. I know his values. It’s that kind of relationship where we can finish each other’s sentences. I love him deeply and know his DNA. I only met his mom once or twice but have heard of her often through his spoken words. The connection we had with our mothers was similar. All that I knew of her, I saw in him.

We often hear about and celebrate the unconditional love of a mother for their children. My friend returned that special love back to his mom. He will miss her and think of her often. But what he will also do is continue living his life modeling the lessons taught to him by his mom. What greater tribute than that to someone you love. Thank you Miss Polly for making my friend such a special person.
