Don’t waste your worship. Do not invest your soul in something or someone who cannot speak life into you. Don’t bow to what can’t bear the weight. Don’t rely on a throne setter who didn’t create you, redeem you or even know your name. Those words are strikingly relevant with the Super Bowl in our rear view mirror.

Think for a moment of all the energy poured into that event. All the players and performers who are yes …. worshiped. I once read that our idols are like vending machines. They take our money, keep our change and never deliver what we expected. They promise but don’t always produce. In that reality, they still demand our sacrifice. They drain you and still ask for more.

Revelation 4:11 calls us to wholehearted worship. "You are worthy our Lord and God, to receive glory, honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being." Yes, Jesus is truly worthy of our worship unlike the idols we chase who demand much and give nothing in return.

The real danger here is that we become what we worship. If we worship control, we become nervous, untrusting and anxious. If we worship success, we become selfish and never satisfied. If we worship ourselves, we become self centered and will be alone all our life. Here’s a reality check. Does your favorite entertainer, athlete or idol know your name?
